What is a switchboard?
A switchboard is a panel of switches that distributes power to different areas of your home or business. They work by dividing the main electrical power supply to your property into smaller components. The electricity can then be fed into power outlets, solar PV panels and other electrical equipment and appliances.
A properly working switchboard does a fantastic job of distributing and separating electrical current but it still needs to be fitted with safety devices such as Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and circuit breakers. Having these measures in place saves lives and prevents property damage. Circuit breakers and RCDs work together to prevent surges of electricity, faulty wiring or other issues from causing structural damage, electrical fires and electrocution.
Why is it important to check and maintain my electrical switchboard?
Safety is paramount when it comes to electricity. Switchboards, especially those in older structures, will eventually reach an age where they will require an upgrade to continue to function safely.
If your switchboard is faulty, you may experience frequent power trips, burning smells and flickering lights. These are all indications of a potentially serious and deadly problem with your switchboard.
Maintaining switchboards is so important that in Western Australia, all homes built after 2000 are legally required to be fitted with a minimum of two RCDs. If your property was built prior to 2000, it is important that you call a qualified electrician to make sure your switchboard is operating safely. Not many people know that if you have a pre 2000’s property, you are also legally required to upgrade your switchboard to the post-2000s standards if you are planning on selling or renting.
